Role of transcription factor AP-1 in integration of cell signaling systems

Transcription factor AP-1 is a dimer formed by DNA-binding proteins of the Jun, Fos, and ATF families (activating transcription factor). AP-1 mediates the cell response to growth factors, cytokines, neurotransmitters, and other intercellular signaling molecules. Regulation of AP-1 activity involves G-proteins, adapter proteins, MAP kinases, and other components of cell regulatory systems. Genes responsive to AP-1 play an important role in regulating cell proliferation, morphogenesis, apoptosis, and differentiation.
