A three-dimensional finite element model of a rigid pavement structure with multiple elastic layers is presented. Specialized features of rigid pavements are incorporated in the model, including finite-size slabs of variable dimensions, finite-thickness base and subbase courses (including stabilized base courses) and linear elastic joint behavior. Advanced modeling features include frictionless contact surface treatment of the slab-base interface and base layer cracking beneath slab joints. Numerical computations are performed on a work station using the finite element program NIKE3D.
