Epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is considered one of the senescence processes. Antisenescence therapies may effectively reduce EMT in peritoneal dialysis models. Human peritoneal mesothelial cells treated with glucose show an increase in senescence and EMT markers; however, empagliflozin attenuates these changes. Mice undergoing peritoneal dialysis exhibit increased senescence and EMT markers, which are decreased by empagliflozin. These findings suggest that empagliflozin may emerge as a novel strategy for prevention or treatment of peritoneal fibrosis.
