Abstract The intensity of Rayleigh and Raman scattering from any molecule in a static magnetic field, parallel to the direction of propagation of the incident light, is shown to be slightly different when the incident light is right and left circularly polarized. The magnetic circular intensity differential of the Rayleigh line depends on components of the Faraday tensors, and that of the Raman lines is a function of the variation of the Faraday tensors with the vibrational coordinates.
