The roles of highly reactive lithium and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) for the lithium-mediated nitrogen fixation (LMNF) are still unclear. In a recently published article in Nature Energy, an unconventional SEI constructed from the ethanol breakdown products, which governs the reactivity of lithium under the LMNF process, is discovered by the cryoelectron microscopy.
