The process of the synthesis of rhodium(III) Tris(acetylacetonate) has been studied by electronic and vibrational spectroscopy, pH-metry, /sup 1/H, /sup 13/C, and /sup 17/O NMR, chromatography, and mass spectrometry. The optimal synthesis conditions are a temperature of about 90/sup 0/C, a time of 2 h, and an equilibrium pH value of 8.5. The maximum yield of the tris chelate is 65%. It has been established that acetylacetone undergoes conversions under the synthesis conditions to form a number of products, which also interact with rhodium. The following distribution of the metal is realized during the synthesis: about 60% passes into the solid phase in the form of the tris(acetylacetonate), about 30% is extracted by chloroform, and 10% remains in the aqueous phase. The laws governing the synthesis and the possibility of the conversion of the rhodium into a single complex species have been discussed.
