The paper investigates the characterization of magnetic targets using the airborne magnetic anomaly detection. The magnetic field magnitude of a magnetic dipole is mathematically deduced and discussed. And the airborne magnetic anomaly signal model is established. The characterization of the magnetic target, i.e., the closest proximity approach, is estimated using the magnetic field magnitude by a real-time nonlinear regression algorithm. Computer simulations are performed to validate the proposed scheme. Results demonstrate that the procedure can yield a satisfactory solution with the mean localization error of 7.0% for SNR=0. The positive outcome renders this scheme an alternative potential candidate for practical MAD remote sensing applications.
