摘要
In this chapter, we will describe physical and mechanical concepts in understanding animal cell shape and cell movement, as opposed to a molecular description. In the introduction, we explain why it is necessary to examine these two problems together. Here, we present a general understanding of the field, and briefly review the established notions surrounding the force generation mechanisms that alter cell shape and propel the cell forward. We then discuss some new notions that have not been substantially considered before, followed by a review of recent studies on these new notions. We also introduce new methodological advancements that led to the current developments in the field. In the end, we briefly comment on the potential clinical applications and future research directions.
