In isolated rabbit lungs perfused with solutions containing little or no carbonic anhydrase activity, nearly complete equilibration between H 14 CO 3 - and 14 CO 2 occurs during a single circulation. This equilibration can be inhibited by blocking pulmonary carbonic anhydrase with acetazolamide.
