摘要
With the death of Herbert Walter Levi on 3 November 2014, a major figure in arachnology was lost. Herb was associated with Harvard University for over 60 years. As Alexander Agassiz Professor of Zoology, he taught Invertebrate Zoology in lecture, laboratory, and in the field. As Museum of Comparative Zoology (MCZ) Curator of Invertebrates, he managed a large and taxonomically diverse collection. Over the course of his career Herb published more than 200 scientific papers and described 1,254 spider species. His descriptions and illustrations set a standard for the field, and his Spiders and Their Kin Golden Guide remains a popular resource. The MCZ benefitted widely from his collecting nearby and abroad. From Herb's original cadre of students several academic generations have entered contemporary arachnology. Sadly, Herb's death was followed shortly by the death of Lorna (Rose) Levi on 15 November 2014, his wife of 65 years, research partner, and co-author, and conservationist, naturalist, and educator in her own right. This paper offers a short biography of Herbert W. Levi and lists his publications and named species.
