Perspective on brain targeting drug delivery systems

Brain targeting drug delivery has been gained increasing attention in the past decade, and many strategies were developed to improve the brain targeting drug delivery by fabricating various nanoparticles-based drug delivery systems. Although impressive progress has been made, the drug delivery efficiency is still far from satisfactory. In this chapter, we focused on several aspects that may influence the brain targeting drug delivery and provided in-depth discussion. These aspects included the targeting specificity, off-target potential, BBB penetration capacity, intra-brain distribution, and neurotoxicity of brain targeting drug delivery systems.
