Today, the number of users and the necessity of high data rates are increasing, and hence the insufficiency of the 4G spectrum has made it necessary to pursue research in 5G wireless communication. Correspondingly, it has become necessary to design low profile, conformable, low cost, miniaturized microstrip antennas for the 5G multi-frequency and multi-band requirements. The 5G frequency bands include sub-6 GHz range and 24.25 GHz to 52.6 GHz range. This review presents a literature survey on design of 4G and 5G antennas and their comparative analysis. The design and performance parameters of the antennas such as size, substrate material, polarization, gain, efficiency, and port isolation (in case of multi element design), etc., have been presented. Various miniaturization techniques and multi-band parametric optimization are also reported. Future design issues for next generation 5G microstrip antennas are analyzed, designed, optimized and developed.
