Phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC) uses aqueous phosphoric acid as proton conducting electrolyte and typically opoerates at temperatures of 150 to 220 oC. Similar to AFC, PAFC is also one of the most mutual fuel cell technologies but its commercial viability is inhindered by the highly corrosive nature of the phosphoric acid electrolyte. This chapter introduces the basic chemistry of phosphoric acid, the operating principles and the key materials developement of PAFC. The issues of crabon corrsion, platinum catalyst dissolution, performance, durability and challenges of PAFC are discussed.
