MS Leite, The Podostemaceae are freshwater hydrophytes, whose diversity center is the Neotropics. In the Amazon they form subaquatic meadows, producing autochthonous carbon, a source of food for the associated fauna. Some relevant issues related to the ecological importance and vulnerability of Podostemaceae have been overlooked, such as (1) rarity, (2) habitat specificity, (3) resilience of rheophilous ecosystems, and (4) ichthyofauna richness. The construction of new hydroelectric power plants (HPPs) in the Amazon raises the need for studies and conservation plans. Hence, I reviewed the state of the art on: (1) the richness and vulnerability of Podostemaceae, (2) threats to the associated ichthyofauna, and (3) species loss due to commercial fisheries and subsistence activities. Eighty-five species and six genera are endemic to the Amazon; 26 species are known exclusively from the type locality. |
