The reaction mechanism of CH3OH synthesisby hydrogenation of CO2 on Cu catalysts is unclear because of the challenge in experimentally detecting reaction intermediates formed by the hydrogenationof adsorbed formate (HCOOa). Since formate is thermally stable on Cu surfaces, it is thought that a large activation energy is required for subsequent formation of the intermediate, but the intermediate is difficult to detect due to its thermal instability. On the other hand, the ability of the Cu surface for the dissociation of H2 is low, so that a temperature of 400K or higher is required for the hydrogenation of formate. Such circumstances make it difficult to detect intermediates after formate. We thus exposed formate on |
