Abstract A long neutron counter based on the Hanson and Mckibben design was built. Its response is constant within 4% over a wide range of neutron energies. The effect of varying the geometry of the paraffin wax cylinder that forms the basis of the counter was investigated. It is found that the uniformity of its response to neutrons within a limited range of energies can be improved by inserting an absorbing sleeve around the BF/sub 3/ counter tube.
