Anal ileostomy with sphincter preservation in patients requiring total colectomy for benign conditions

An operation is described for the preservation of a continent sphincter in the performance of an anal ileostomy after total colectomy. This procedure is advised in patients requiring total colectomy for benign lesions—specifically, chronic ulcerative colitis and polypoid adenomatosis of the colon. Two patients with ulcerative colitis are presented in whom this operation was successfully performed.
