A new interrelationship between smoothing and deconvolutions is derived. It provides an insight which leads to a one-parameter smoothing function containing the Fourier transform of the instrumental resolution functions. The parameter is determined by the signal-to-noise ratio of the data being smoothed. This approach removes some of the arbitrary aspects of data smoothing.
