This project is a replication of Study 1A from Rubin et al.'s paper "Comparing the value of perceived human versus AI-generated empathy" in Nature Human Behavior. The goal of this study is to understand whether the perceived source of a response (i.e., human or AI-generated) affect how empathic participants perceive the response to be. In this between-subjects study, participants will be asked to describe a recent emotional situation and are then told that the generated response is from either another human or an AI response. In both cases, the response is generated by a large language model. Participants are then asked to rate perceived empathy of positive resonance. Following Rubin et al.'s work, we expect that participants will perceive human-generated responses as more empathic compare to AI-generated responses.
