Abstract Perovskite NaCeTi 2 O 6 (NCT)‐supported Ni catalysts were prepared and examined for the steam reforming of methane (SRM) with a low H 2 O/CH 4 ratio (1:1), and their structures were characterized by means of powder XRD, energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy high resolution TEM, temperature‐programmed desorption of CO 2 , temperature‐programmed reduction with H 2 , Ni K‐edge/Ce L III ‐edge X‐ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy and extended X‐ray absorption fine structure . A 4 wt % Ni/NCT catalyst exhibited higher activity than 4 wt % Ni/TiO 2 , Ni/(CeO 2 +TiO 2 ), and Ni/Ce 2 O 3 catalysts for SRM reactions at 973 K, and better resistance to carbon deposition was observed on 4 wt % Ni/NCT compared to 4 wt % Ni/CeO 2 . It is suggested that the characteristic performance of the Ni/NCT catalysts for the SRM reactions are related to the basic character and oxygen conducting behavior of NCT to control the balance of CH 4 decomposition and carbon gasification with steam on the surfaces of the Ni/NCT catalysts.
