Normal puberty starts when pulsatile release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus begins. This triggers the release of luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone from the pituitary. In both sexes, these pituitary hormones then activate gonadal function.
