Mechanotransduction is influenced by the involvement of different integrin subtypes and their high ECM-ligand binding specificity. This specificity of integrins contributes to various cell mechanical responses such as adhesion and migration. This review focuses on the role of integrins and associated proteins in cellular adaptation to substrate rigidity. It also highlights the specific contribution of various integrin subtypes in force generation and mechanotransduction.
