Graphite undergoes volume expansion and contraction upon lithium ion intercalation and deintercalation process, which affect the internal microstructure of graphite electrode during cycling. In this work, the expansion and contraction in graphite electrode was investigated using in situ electrochemical dilatometry to determine which factor affect the volume change behavior. It was found that the thickness change of the graphite electrode was highly correlated with the microstructure of graphite electrode, such as the preferential orientation of graphite particles, pore structure of graphite electrodes. It was also found that the differential expansion plots of graphite electrodes provides more detailed information on the expansion and contraction behavior of Li ions inserted into graphite. Detailed findings obtained from in situ dilatometry on the graphite electrode will be discussed in the presenation.
