Confounding occurs in epidemiologic research when the measured association between an exposure and disease occurrence is distorted by an imbalance between exposed and non-exposed persons with regard to one or more other risk factors for the disease. This chapter describes what confounding is, how it is assessed, and how it can be controlled. Exercises are provided at the end of the chapter.
