Representativeness, while a fundamental aspect of any data collection activity, is often overlooked or not given sufficient attention during the planning, implementation, and assessment phases. This introductory comment and the companion papers together address the importance of representativeness in the life of a data collection project and its impact on related project decisions and discusses research and science related to representative sampling and subsampling.
