Abstract Both recruitment and promotion are essential to the promotion of equality and diversity, dealing as they do, respectively, with entry and progress in employment and the rewards that follow. The equality enactments for each strand make it unlawful for an employer to discriminate against a person in the arrangements it makes for, amongst other things, recruitment and promotion. We have chosen to put recruitment and promotion together into one chapter as they share many of the same characteristics, in particular the selection of an appropriate candidate to take a particular job.
