THE ANALYSIS OF MORAL VALUES CONTAINED IN THE “CAPTAINFANTASTIC” MOVIE

In this study, the writer chose the “Captain Fantastic” movie in order to be analyzed. There were three research questions that could be analyzed from this movie; 1) The moral values contained in the “Captain Fantastic” movie, 2) the ways of moral values presented in the “Captain Fantastic” movie, and 3) the implications of the moral values in the “Captain Fantastic” movie in relation to the family education. The methodology of this study was qualitative study, in which in the qualitative study, the data was in the form of oral and written form. In order to made this study as a scientific study, the writer used the triangulation method, precisely the data triangulation method, which meant that the data were collected from different sources with the same results until the writer was confident to state that his data as valid data. The primary data was the script of the “Captain Fantastic” movie; meanwhile, the secondary data was taken from the interview process of the experts of literature and movie. In addition, the writer added other sources, such as book and internet sources that were reliable and valid. The results of this study were the “Captain Fantastic” movie represented two types of moral values; 1) the positive moral values, and 2) the negative moral values. The positive moral values were: 1) discipline, 2) mature, 3) honesty, 4) curios, 5) apologizing, 6) smart, 7) open-minded, 8) strong philosophy, 9) diligent, 10) loving nature, 11) responsible, and 12) trustworthy. On the other hand, the negative moral values were racism, stubborn, not modern, and vulgar moral values. Both of those types of moral values were reinforced by the experts of literature and movie to become valid. For several ways of moral values presented in the “Captain Fantastic” movie, there were indirect interpretation moral values, moral values through character, dialogue, and plot which were also reinforced by the experts of literature and movie to become valid. Finally, in order to answer the implications of the moral values in the “Captain Fantastic” movie in relation to the family education, the writer revealed the home-schooling process and results in the “Captain Fantastic” movie, in which for the results, there were failed and successful results of home-schooling. The writer also compared the moral values in this movie and in the family education claimed by Divietri (1994), and “Captain Fantastic” had 14 of 18 moral values in the family education as the theoretical implication. At the end, practically, several important implications of “Captain Fantastic” movie’s moral values in relation to family education were the balance between informal education precisely family education and the formal education precisely formal school, and also the balance between technology and social discourse management.
