Abstract The haemolytic potential of Ambilhar was tested in a Caucasian (Type B−) G6PD deficient subject. Using a dosage of 25 mg./kg./day p.o. for 7 days, a haemolytic process was precipitated. However, considering current dosage schemes, and the self-limited nature of the haemolytic process, the risk of precipitating a clinically significant haemolytic reaction with Ambilhar in enzyme deficient subjects would appear to be small. Studies are needed to determine the haemolytic potential of this drug in African (Type A−) G6PD deficient subjects.
