Filtration and Backwashing Performance of Biologically-Active Filters

Before widespread use can be made of biological filters, it is crucial to develop an understanding of the filtration and backwashing performance of these filters. Experimental results indicated that the biological filter impairs microbial quality, reduces filter runs, and produces higher peaks during filter ripening. Anthracite/sand and GAC/sand biological filters were equally good in producing low assimilable carbon (AOC) waters but the latter media generated a higher head loss.
