A new species and a new synonym of spotted-winged Bombylius Linnaeus (Diptera: Bombyliidae: Bombyliinae) from China, with an updated distribution

The genus Bombylius Linnaeus comprises 338 described species, including several species with distinctive spotted wing patterns. Using an integrative taxonomic approach combining morphology and DNA barcoding, we revise the taxonomy of these spotted-winged species in China. We describe Bombylius vittitergus sp. nov., synonymize Bombylius stellatus syn. nov. with B. callopterus Loew, and formally remove B. discolor Mikan and B. pygmaeus Fabricius from the Chinese fauna due to misidentification. Species hypotheses are supported by morphological characters, phylogenetic analyses, and genetic distance of COI barcodes. A key and high-resolution images are provided to facilitate identification.
