Surface patterning is effective in improving friction characteristics under lubricating conditions. However, it has hardly to be shown that nanometer-scale patterns can control friction coefficient under oil lubrication. We fabricated three kinds of nanostripe structures having nano-scale grooves that was formed by depositing two kinds of materials on micro-scale slope array and by polishing the surface. Friction tests were carried out by rubbing SiC disk under various load and speed conditions. Friction coefficient was decreased with increase of sliding speed. Zigzag and straight stripes showed lower friction coefficient than discrete stripes. The higher area ratio of nano grooves was, the lower friction coefficient was measured under high load and low speed conditions. I have concluded the improvement in frictional characteristics by performing the nano-pattern.
