The theoretical interpretation of molecular core binding energies as measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

A theoretical interpretation of molecular core binding energies as measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is given, and it is shown that simple relationships between "shifts" in binding energies and "charge distributions" can be misleading.
