Sun-Yu Pedestrian Arch Bridge, Seoul, Korea

The design and construction of the Sun-yu Bridge, which links the south of Seoul to Sun-yu Island in the Han River, South Korea are described. The pedestrian bridge was designed to celebrate the Millennium. It consists of a concrete arch and two steel access bridges to the arch. The main arch is constructed of Reactive Powder Concrete (RPC), a new type of ultra-high performance concrete, reinforced with steel fibres. Tuned-mass-dampers are used to control vibration. The profile and cross section of the arch structure are described and the mechanical properties and a typical composition of RPC are outlined. The structural analysis of the bridge is described. The arch was divided into six segments for fabrication and ease of construction. Details are given of the fabrication and construction processes. The design, fabrication and installation of the tuned-mass-dampers are outlined.
