The present paper developed a new kinetic spectrophotometric method to determine trace amount of bismuth(Ⅲ) in water, which was based on the inhibitory effect of trace amount of bismuth(Ⅲ) on the oxidative fading reaction of crystal violet(CV) oxidized by with hydrogen peroxide in HAc-NaAc medium. The optimum conditions and kinetic parameters were obtained from the investigation on the effects of sodium dodecyl sulphonate(SDS),H2O2 amount,CV amount,pH,reaction temperature and time on the reaction. It indicated that the method could give a detection limit for bismuth(Ⅲ) of 2.77×10-8 g/L,and its linear range was 0~8.0 μg/L.The satisfactory results could be obtained using kinetic spectrophotometric method in the determination of trace amounts of bismuth in water samples.
