It has recently been shown that a wavefunction formed from an antisymmetrized product of identical geminals times a single determinant is, when optimized properly, a consistent ground state of the particle-hole propagator. This optimized generalized antisymmetrized geminal power (GAGP) wavefunction is reviewed and its computational implementation described. The procedure is applied to the X2S state of Li, 3S and X1S states of Be, and X1S state of Mg.
