This chapter serves as an introduction to the concept, history, and significance of peptide self-assembly and engineering. The definition of peptide self-assembly and its importance are briefly discussed within the context of various applications. A chronological overview of various typical peptide building blocks utilized for fabricating well-defined nanostructures with long-range order is provided. The factors influencing the thermodynamics and kinetics of peptide self-assembly are critically elaborated upon. Finally, it is emphasized how peptide self-assembly and engineering have created new opportunities for the sustainable development of our society.
