An Optical Fiber-Optic Icing Detection Sensor

Bad icing condition on aircraft can cause really bad safety accident because of the change in aerodynamic characteristics. To protect the aircraft from the danger of icing, a reliable icing detection system is necessary. In this work, a three-signal-fiber-optic icing sensor was designed and fabricated. It was calibrated in the wind tunnel and performed well in the following repeatability test. With a wide measuring range, high sensitivity, lightweight, and high strength, this sensor at the same time, this sensor can be a useful tool for the detection of the ice in flight.
