摘要
Severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), cerebral hemorrhage or cardiac arrest can lead to disorders of consciousness, such as coma, vegetative state and minimally conscious state. Patients usually transition from one state to another in the first months after the neurological event, but some patients remain in vegetative state or minimally conscious state indefinitely. Many groups have reported increased arousal or cognitive performance in these patients following deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the centromedian/parafascicularis complex or related structures. Our aim is to systematically review the clinical and preclinical literature supporting a possible therapeutic benefit of DBS for disorders of consciousness.
