This chapter provides the basic characteristics, FDA-approved idications, side effects/toxicity and dosage information of the Tamiflu (Oseltamivir). Oseltamivir carboxylate is an inhibitor of influenza virus neuraminidase, affecting the release of viral particles. Oseltamivir carboxylate is indicated for the treatment of influenza A and B in patients two weeks and older. Prophylaxis of influenza A and B in patients one year and older. Oseltamivir is well absorbed orally, with or without food. Oseltamivir phosphate is available as 30 mg, 45 mg, or 75 mg capsules and as a powder for oral suspension, which when constituted with water as directed contains6 mg/mL of oseltamivir base. Dose for prophylaxis in the 13 years and older is 75 mg once daily for at least 10 days. Oseltamivir is indicated for prophylaxis of influenza in pediatric patients one year and older. Oseltamivir is active against avian H5N1 and novel H1N1 influenza.
