A Systematic Review of Challenges Faced by Micro and Small Enterprises in Tourism Destinations: Producing Solutions through Resilience Building and Sustainable Development

Micro and small enterprises (MSEs) play a crucial role in the tourism industry, yet they have faced numerous challenges. This systematic review examines challenges faced by MSEs in the tourism industry, utilizing a PRISMA-method analysis of 82 Scopus database articles. Four interconnected themes emerge: lack of funding, lack of training, lack of education and awareness, and lack of skills. Funding emerges as the root cause of these challenges. The study underscores the need for policymakers to address the intertwined issues of funding, skills, training, education, and awareness hindering MSEs. Despite the recognition of these challenges in existing literature, few studies propose solutions for sustainable development. This research provides valuable insights for policymakers, bridging a gap in understanding the issues faced by MSEs. The proposed solutions aim to create a win-win situation for all stakeholders and the destination in this era of constant change brought on by COVID-19 and other crises.
