摘要
This article discusses China's ambitious project of constructing an "ecological civilization," attempting to balance continued economic growth and poverty alleviation with contributing to humanity's shared project of preventing climate breakdown. It outlines China's historical development since the Chinese Revolution, highlighting the rapid industrialization that lifted millions out of poverty but also led to significant environmental degradation. In recent years, China has shifted priorities towards green development, aiming to decarbonise its energy system. The article details China's strategies and commitments to peak carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, showcasing initiatives in reducing coal dependency, enhancing renewable energy capacity, innovating in clean technologies, and protecting biodiversity. These developments are positioning China as a key player in global environmental sustainability.
