The extraction and identification of the mixed alkaloid fromEupato-rium japonicum Thumb plant was reported previously. The more purified total alkaloid included many alkaloids which were detected by thin-layer chromatography. In vitro, the 50%inhibition(IC50) of HeLa cell growth was 103.4±9.8ug/ mg alkaloid, which indicated that the alkaloid possessed cytotoxicity. In vivo, the increase life sp-ans(ILS) of S180 ascitic tumor bearing mice in two experiments were as follows: total alkaloid 50mg/ kg/ d×7(ip.) induced inhibition rate of 33.93%and 44.43%, GTX 15mg/ kg/ dx7(sc) -56.59%and 61.43%, but the ILS increased to 84.4%and 94.64%after the combination of these 2 drugs. When the alkaloid was injected subcutaneously, the Life span was not significantly Loner as compared to the control group. However, the ILS increased from51.33% and 57.24% to 78.53%and 87. 93%, when the alkaloid (sc) was combined with CTX. These results suggested that the alkaloid showed synergismwith CTX.
