Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are a popular choice for insulating metal components that are subjected to a large degree of mechanical stress. TBCs not only protect the metal components from the high temperatures, but also help to reduce corrosion. They also help to reduce noise and improve fuel efficiency. The new coating combinations for the thermal barrier coatings were selected in the present work by adding Cerium oxide (CeO2) and aluminum oxide (Al2O3) in yttrium stabilized zirconia (YSZ) material. The combinations were composed of CeO2 ranging from 2 wt% to 10 wt% and Al2O3 ranging from 30 wt% to 40 wt%, respectively. The plasma spraying technique was adopted for deposition purpose. The addition of these compounds has resulted in the refinement of the microstructure of the deposited coatings. The melting point of the material has decreased, and the coatings have showed less porosity as compared to YSZ coatings.
