A simple procedure is proposed for a synthesis of azo-derivatives of carboranes using the reaction of lithium carbo-ranes with phenyldiazonium fluorborate. It was shown that azo-derivatives of carboranes were also obtained by the condensation of nitrosocarboranes with aromatic amines. Hydrogenation of benzeneazocarboranes led to hydrazinecarboranes. Cleavage of benzeneazocarboranes with a solution of potassium hydroxide in alcohol gives benzeneazodicarbanido-undecarbo-rate(-1).
