摘要
Abstract Traditional Chinese literary theory has long demonstrated a deep interest in the metaphysical origins and persuasive power of literature, alongside sustained efforts to link literary writing with the principles of political and social order. However, the term wendao 文道 did not emerge as a holistic concept in discussions of literature's function and moral obligations until the twentieth century. Influenced by Western literary theory, modern Chinese scholars adopted the term to describe a historical school of thought that emphasizes literature's intellectual roots and its moral and social commitments. This article traces the theoretical foundations and historical development of this traditional school. Rather than focusing on the theoretical construction of wendao or the interplay between its two components, wen 文 (literature) and dao 道 (the Way), as a unified concept, the authors examine how the dynamic tension and competition between these elements have shaped Chinese literary theory. From the pre-Qin philosopher Xunzi to such figures as Liu Xie and Han Yu, and through the morally inclined Confucianists and neo-Confucianists of the Tang and Song dynasties to the technically oriented essayists of the Ming and Qing dynasties, this discourse reflects a consistent effort to balance the political and social mission of literature with the creative power of the literary process. Understanding the theoretical foundations and historical evolution of this consensus provides an essential framework for interpreting traditional Chinese literature and literary theory.
