TaqMan Real-Time PCR Assay forCoccidioides

Sir: I read the recent publication by Sheff et al. with great interest [1]. These authors concluded that their new TaqMan real-time PCR assay would provide a rapid and accurate method for the differentiation of the Coccidioides species [1]. While I agree that this new diagnostic tool can provide accurate results, there remain questions as to whether it is rapid and cost effective. Real time PCR might provide faster results than basic mycological identifi cation procedures, but its use is associated with higher costs.
