High obstructive sleep apnea risk in patients with type A aortic dissection

High obstructive sleep apnea risk in patients with type A aortic dissection Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been associated with aortic dissection. Most of the studies were included type A and type B aortic dissections. Objectives: The goal of our study was to determine the risk of OSA in patients with type A aortic dissection. Methods: We included patients who were admitted to the department of vascular surgery with acute type A aortic dissection in our hospital between between Jan 2017 and Dec 2017. OSA risk were assessment by STOP-Bang (Snoring, Tired or sleepy, Observed apnea, high blood Pressure, Body mass index, Age, Neck, Gender) Questionnaire. Results: Among 202 subjects with type A aortic dissection, 150 were male, the age was 48.2±10.7 years, BMI was 25.9±4.0 kg/m2, neck circumference was 41.6± 4.8 cm, 87.1% were found with the risk of OSA (STOP-Bang score ≥ 3), 63.9% were determined with high risk of OSA (STOP-Bang score ≥ 5). High blood pressure was found for the maximum number of patients (85.6%) followed by gender (male) (74.8%), snoring (70.3%), neck circumference > 40 cm (65.9%), body mass index (BMI) >25kg/m2 (54.0%), age (> 50 years old) (44.1%), Observed apnea (31.2%) and tired/sleepy (26.2%). The risk of OSA was observed for 70.3% of patients younger than 40 years old, 80.6% of patients 40-49 years old, 94.3% of patients 50-59 years old, 83.3% of patients ≥60 years old. Conclusions: A high prevalence of OSA risk among patients with type A aortic dissection were observed. OSA may have a strong linkage with type A aortic dissection.
