Abstract The sedimentation phenomenon of magnetorheological (MR) fluid has a significant impact on its performance and applications. The mudline, as a landmark feature of MR fluid sedimentation, has characteristics that contain crucial information about sedimentation evolution. Precisely monitoring and deeply analyzing the mudline characteristics are of great significance for intuitively and accurately characterizing MR fluid sedimentation. Therefore, this paper proposes a research method for the characteristics of MR fluid sedimentation mudline based on position tracking. Compared with other research methods, this method can conduct continuous and dynamic monitoring of the mudline and more intuitively and comprehensively characterize the sedimentation process of MR fluid. Specifically, based on the density difference in the mudline region, a cross-mudline floater with a specific density is designed to dynamically track the mudline. This simultaneously enables the continuous and dynamic monitoring of sedimentation mudline characteristics, namely mudline position, concentration in the mudline area, and magnetic permeability. The results indicate that this method effectively achieves the continuous and dynamic monitoring of sedimentation mudline of MR fluids with various volume fractions. On this basis, the characteristics of sedimentation mudline are further studied and analyzed, providing a research foundation for further dissecting the sedimentation mechanism of MR fluid.
