Analysis on the death caused by respiratory system diseases and the trend of years of potential life lost among residents in Baoshan district

Objective The aim of this study was to analyze the mortalities caused by respiratory system diseases and to interpret the epidemiological characters and influence among the residents in Baoshan district of Shanghai from 1991 to 2011, in order to provide evidence for evaluation of effective preventive measures. Methods Data on overall mortality rate, standardized mortality rate, mortality cause percentage, Years of Potential Life Lost(YPLL), Average Years of life lost(AYLL) were collected and calculated respectively. Results Respiratory system diseases were the third main cause of mortality among the residents of the Baoshan district. A total of 13 094 deaths were due to the respiratory system diseases, with the average mortality rate of 82.75/100 000, accounting for 12.13% of all mortalities. The overall mortality rate, mortality cause percentage, and standardized mortality rate for male were higher than those for female. The overall mortality rate, standardized mortality rate, mortality cause percentage, YPLL, and AYLL were higher with the aging. Conclusion In Baoshan district, respiratory system diseases have become the main cause of mortality, and seriously influence the residents' health.
