There are three important measurements of irrigation efficiency for an irrigation district. One is the conveyance efficiency of the district channel system the second is the distribution and field application efficiency on the farm while the third is the overall efficiency, a combination of the previous two efficiencies. Another type of efficiency is water use efficiency, measured as farm production per unit of irrigation water. Estimates of the three irrigation efficiencies and water use efficiency have been made for part of the Swan Hill Flats for three irrigation seasons. The Swan Hill Flats are located at the north-west end of the Goulburn-Murray Irrigation District in northern Victoria. The 3144 hectares in the study area are used for pastures which are irrigated by the border check system. The main use for the pasture is dairy production.
